Vatican, 4-6 November 2008

ImageProf Dr M. Din Syamsuddin Chairman of Muhammadiyah and President/Moderator of Asia Conference on Religions for Peace (ACRP) attended the 1st Muslim-Catholic Dialogue Forum that was held on November 4-6, 2008 in Vatican. He is the only participant representing Indonesian Muslim Scholar

 

The forum was attended by the Vatican delegation which included some representatives of minority Christian communities in Iraq, Syiria and Pakistan and Muslim participants including Sunni and Shittes scholars from around the world as well as reverts from the US, Canada and the UK

The aims of the meeting are to discuss the existing commonalities and differences between Islam and Christianity

The Vatican meeting is to be the first in a series held by the permanent Catholic-Muslim forum. It was opened by Cardinal Jean-Louis Tauran, President of the Pontifical Council for Interreligious Dialogue and Mustafa Ceric, the Grand Mufti of Bosnia.

Prof Dr M. Din Syamsuddin suggested that this forum is very important because it has historical values and addressing theological problems.
He acknowledged that there are certain differences among the two religions but both have some commonalities as well. Furthermore, Prof Din asserted the current human's enemies are not in religions circles but humanity problems such as poverty, injustice, ignorance, or environment damage/collaps

Participants of this forum also meet Pope Benedict XVI
